WHAT IS CHIN AUGMENTATION?
Genioplasty, also called chin augmentation, is a procedure which reshapes the jawline to provide a stronger profile and may also correct a chin which has receded.
BENEFITS OF CHIN AUGMENTATION
Chin implants can greatly impact the facial appearance and create a balance between facial features. Weak chins can negatively alter the appearance of other facial features; the nose is often affected, as a poor chin often makes the nose appear out of balance. Chin augmentation and rhinoplasty are often performed together to maximize positive outcomes.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A CHIN AUGMENTATION?
Chin augmentation procedures are performed by placing a Mittelman Extended Chin Implant in the chin region, which improves jawline appearance and promotes positive facial harmony.
This procedure lasts approximately 30 minutes up to an hour and is performed under local or general anesthesia. A minor incision is made either inside the mouth at the lower lip or underneath the chin. A pocket is created in the tissue which sits atop the jawbone, and an implant which has been determined to be the correct shape and size will be inserted. Following implant insertion, the incision is closed, and tape may be applied to the chin.
IS CHIN AUGMENTATION RIGHT FOR ME?
If your chin appears to be receding or weakened and you wish to restore its prominent appearance, chin augmentation may be able to help you. The best candidates have reasonable expectations for surgery and are in good health.
CHIN AUGMENTATION RECOVERY
Swelling and bruises may appear after chin augmentation is performed, and swelling may inhibit facial movement. Dietary restrictions may be necessary if incisions are located inside the mouth. Pain medication will be available to alleviate pain in the first few days of recovery. Dissolvable sutures may be used; if not, sutures are removed five to seven days following surgery. Refrain from returning to work for a week following the procedure, and do not start participating in laborious physical activities for six weeks; you do not want to accidently bump this area while healing.
