What is the IPL® Photofacial Treatment?
IPL® (Intense Pulsed Light) is a result of the latest innovation and technology in aesthetic medicine for treating skin problems, such as past sun damage, rosacea, acne, unwanted body hair, varicose veins, and hyperpigmentation, with the use of broad spectrum light. IPL® rejuvenates your complexion with minimal risk or discomfort.
During the photofacial treatment, IPL® technology uses high energy light waves to minimize or completely eliminate the skin concern being targeted. The light also encourages collagen growth, which gives skin a renewed, radiant appearance. A treatment course usually involves several sessions in order to achieve the ultimate results.
IPL® Photofacial treatments are fantastic for a treating a wide variety of skin and dermatologic conditions.
- Age spots
- Sun spots
- Brown spots
- Seborrheic keratoses
- Spider veins
- Decreased size of pores
Am I a Good Candidate for IPL® Photofacial Treatment?
Past sun damage, blemishes, age spots, large pores, freckles and varicose veins are all conditions that can be treated successfully with IPL®. IPL® treatment is a convenient option for those patients who cannot afford to take much time off from their busy lives as no downtime is required. IPL® can also be used to help treat unwanted body hair, regardless of your hair color or skin type and sensitivity. During your one-on-one consultation, Dr. Mittelman will discuss photofacial treatment with you and address any of your questions or concerns to help you in deciding if IPL® is right for you.
What Happens During the IPL® Photofacial Procedure?
Before treatment begins, a cold gel is applied to the targeted area to cool the skin. The hand-held IPL® instrument is then placed on the treatment area as broad spectrum light penetrates the skin’s many layers. This light is designed to specifically correct areas of unwanted pigmentation, broken capillaries, unwanted body hair, rosacea and more.
The treatment is not painful. If you have sensitive skin, a topical anesthetic may be applied in order to numb the skin in the targeted area. It is an outpatient procedure performed right in the comfort of our office. Each visit generally lasts 30 minutes or less. You will likely notice a difference after your first IPL® Photofacial treatment, however, the ideal correction takes around five treatments spaced four to six weeks apart.
What Can I Expect During IPL® Photofacial Recovery?
You are able to return to work and your daily activities immediately following your procedure. The skin in the treated area may be pink or slightly red, and in some cases, you may experience mild swelling for a few days. Makeup may be worn to conceal any skin irritation. Initial results are visible within only a few days of treatment, with your skin appearing fresher and more radiant.
It is important to note that your skin will be very sensitive to the sun afterward. For a period of time following your IPL® procedure, you will need to avoid direct sun exposure and must wear sunblock whenever you are outside. Sunblock use is important in order to avoid future sun damage and age spots. You will want to take care of your beautiful new skin!
