It is important to remember that laser resurfacing treatments do not prevent the skin from continuing through the natural aging process nor provide prevention of future skin concerns. In addition, facial flaws cannot be eliminated completely, but rather, are minimized as much as possible. GETTING BACK TO NORMAL
You should expect the new skin that is revealed as a result of the laser treatment to appear bright pink or red for a few weeks following your procedure. Dr. Mittelman may prescribe topical medications to help decrease the appearance of this side effect more quickly. Approximately two weeks post-treatment, you may apply makeup to the treatment area to gently conceal any temporary changes and side effects to the skin. For some patients undergoing this procedure, the pink color in the treatment area can remain for up to six months.
In a few cases, patients may develop sensitivity to certain cosmetics they used before undergoing the laser resurfacing treatment and must avoid these products or brands during the healing process.
The most important recommendation for post-treatment recovery is to protect the treated skin from sun exposure until the area has completely healed. Applying sunblock with a minimum SPF of 15 will help reduce the chance of suffering new sun damage to the skin and helps to maintain treatment results. It is also recommended that patients wear sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB filtered lenses every time they are outside in order to protect the skin around the eyes. Wide-brimmed hats are also recommended to help shade the face.

Final results may not be visible for several months, but after the redness of the skin fades, the skin will appear smoother and younger looking.
It is important to remember that the new skin that results from laser resurfacing is not immune to the effects of natural aging. The results of treatment can be realized long term with the correct aftercare and sun protection. Over time, a patient’s face will naturally begin to develop new expression lines caused by natural facial movements. This is unavoidable but can be minimized with further laser treatments.
