Rosacea
ROSACEA TREATMENT IN LOS ALTOS, CA
Rosacea is a skin condition involving the swelling of blood vessels in the face, leading to skin appearing red and flushed. Rosacea often appears on the cheeks initially but can spread to the chin and forehead. In severe cases, pimple-like bumps, ruddy skin, and a bulbous nose may occur when left untreated. The severity of a person’s rosacea is graded on a scale from one to four, with four being the most severe form.
Harry Mittelman, MD, of Mittelman Plastic Surgery in Los Altos, is proud to serve San Jose, Palo Alto and residents of neighboring locales in California. Dr. Mittelman is a renowned board-certified facial plastic surgeon who provides treatment for skin conditions, such as rosacea and other skin conditions that can benefit from laser resurfacing. Rosacea can cause more symptoms than just redness. In fact, there are so many symptoms of rosacea that the condition has four subtypes:
- Papulopustular rosacea: Swelling, redness and skin breakouts similar to acne
- Phymatous rosacea: Skin-thickening accompanied by a bumpy texture
- Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea: Flushing, visible blood vessels, and redness
- Ocular rosacea: Red, irritated eyes and swollen eyelids. This subtype often results in permanent skin redness on the face.
ROSACEA SYMPTOMS
Symptoms may include persistent redness, a flushing of the face and cheeks, pimples or bumps and noticeable blood vessels under the skin. The eyes can also grow irritated and appear bloodshot. The skin can become extremely dry, and skin tissue may grow thicker and swollen, typically on the nose.
These symptoms of rosacea can cause the sufferer to have feelings of embarrassment and low self-esteem. Left untreated, rosacea usually continues to progress, which can significantly alter the sufferer’s general health and quality of life. When treated properly by a health care professional, rosacea can be managed or even reversed.
WHAT CAUSES ROSACEA?

HOW IS ROSACEA TREATED?
IPL® is very effective in treating rosacea. A non-invasive procedure such asIPL® can significantly improve areas of telangiectasia and redness linked with rosacea. Antibiotics can also be employed to minimize inflamed areas.
Intense Pulsed Light (IPL®) is a gentle therapy that helps minimize the appearance of sun damage, dark spots, broken veins and certain vascular conditions. Since IPL® treatment results in no discomfort, no anesthesia is required. You can even resume your normal activities following your IPL® treatment.
IS LASER ROSACEA TREATMENT PAINFUL?
Although it is normal to experience some discomfort, laser rosacea treatment is not painful. A topical numbing agent is not even required before treatment. Your level of discomfort will depend upon your individual pain threshold. It is rare for a patient to complain about pain during treatment.
HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE TO RECOVER FROM LASER ROSACEA TREATMENT?
Because laser rosacea treatment is non-invasive, no downtime should be expected. You will probably notice some skin redness, which should only last for a few hours after treatment. Some swelling can also be expected, which normally resolves itself within hours, although some cases last up to four days.
