WHAT ARE WARTS?

Warts are typically rough, raised growths on the skin. Because they are viral, they may appear in clusters. Warts can appear on any area of the body, but are most commonly found on the hands.

THREE KINDS 

There are three major types of warts:

• Common: often appear on the hands, but they can also be found in any area of the body.
• Plantar:  are located on the feet.
• As the name suggests, genital: appear in the genital or groin areas.

While common warts can vanish on their own, you may wish to have them removed by a plastic surgeon.

WHAT CAUSES THE WARTS?

They are caused by human papillomaviruses or HPV. Warts can spread from one body part to another and from one person to another through physical contact.

WHAT DO WARTS LOOK LIKE?

They are often cauliflower shaped or resemble a blister. They are flesh-colored, pink or a few shades darker than your skin tone. Warts may contain a pattern of black dots within them. These are blood vessels that have clotted inside of the wart.

HOW DO YOU TREAT WARTS?

Common warts go away on their own, but may spread to other areas of your body and cause more warts. Dr. Mittelman uses Erbium YAG laser treatments for the removal of common warts. Erbium YAG lasers are safer for the removal of warts than CO2 lasers because human papillomavirus (HPV) DNA is not found in the laser plume.The Er:Yag Laser is a “surgical” alternative to the Nd:Yag Laser and can be used to gently remove the wart layer-by-layer by evaporating infected tissue. Skin tags, polyps, and other wart-like skin growths are also removed with this laser. Scarring is minimal.

CAN I PREVENT WARTS?

Warts can be preventable if you wash your hands frequently and do not share manicure tools, such as nail clippers or nail files. If you have a wart, cover it with a bandage. This will keep the HPV strain from spreading to other areas before we can remove it. Do not pick at your wart.
